Kareem Abdul-Jabbar's experiences during his first forty two years of life prepared him very well for his life outside of basketball. Kareem's childhood in Harlem with his strict parents taught him to always respect authority. His parents instilled in him hard work and discipline that he admits "was vital in my upbringing and tooled me well for the future." Now that Kareem's basketball career is over, his life most certainly isn't.
Kareem has had many other non-basketball escapades to keep him busy and a very active member in today's society. One of these endeavors was a fairly major movie role in the film Airplane. He played a pilot in this movie and enjoyed himself greatly with the challenges that the role of an actor brings to the table for him. He has also appeared in several different, smaller movie gigs. Kareem also appeared as a contestant on the CBS Television Show called Splash in which contestants dive into pools off of the high dives.
Another part of Kareem's life that he has been successful in is the writing of both kids and adult books. His most acclaimed children's book was a book called "What Color is My World?" This received the NAACP Award for the best children's book if the year for 2012. Some titles of his adult literature range from "Brothers in Arms", "Giant Steps", and "Kareem". Kareem says that he is "just as proud to have seen his first book published as to be the NBA's All Time leading scorer." He even coached the Oklahoma Storm to the United States Basketball League championship. Kareem one day dreams to be either a Division One coach or to coach in the NBA.
